The initial purpose and the reason for the creation of yachts, was the protection from pirates. The Dutch navy came up with these sea vessels in order to hunt down and catch pirates that were sailing around the king’s sea. They were suitable for such a mission due to their lighter weight and type of construction which allowed them to move fast and maneuver into shallow waters - something that the big navy ships could not do. For many years yachts remained solely in the service of the navy. Later, however, when royalties began to favor these elegant vessels, things started to change. Specifically, when king Charles II used it for his own personal purposes, everyone else followed. The rich and the aristocrats of the world began to favor yachts for reason of luxury and for games. Apart from a supreme form of travel, yachting was also exercised as a means of racing. Along with the aristocrats, the uprising class of rich merchants used these big boats in order to engage in games against each other as a way to demonstrate wealth, power and ability.

Today, according to international surveys, the world's super-rich spend on their yachts the unbelievable amount of approximately $22 billion a year. Yachts are used solely for recreational purposes, mainly as an alternative way of vacation.
