Santorini, The Aegean’s Eruption Of Scenery

A once circular island, fittingly named Strongyle by its inhabitants, that caused the gradual downfall of the cities of Crete during the Minoan times, Santorini, a namesake deriving from the church dedicated to Saint Irene found in the village of Perissa, is a volcanic island located in the southern Aegean Sea. Many to see, more to visit and enjoy, stay in dana villas and taste everything. It is the largest island of the self – titled archipelago, which also contains the inhabited island of Therasia, the uninhabited island of Aspronisi and the volcanic formations of Palea and Nea Kameni.

The remains of the volcanic crater, or more precisely caldera, that remained after the initial island was wracked by the eruption are inhabited, with small white houses, true to the architecture of the Cyclades, dotting the landscape, and is the first sight one can see when arriving to the island via boat, and can of course be observed when arriving by plane. One of the most famous locations of the caldera is the village of Oia, in the northwestern part of the island, and due to its elevation offers awe – inspiring view of the sea below. To no one’s surprise, it also houses the most sought out location for tourists to photograph the grand spectacle that is the sunset in Santorini: the chapel of Agios Nikolaos, found inside the remains of an old fortification built in the 15th century.
