The founding of the city coincides with a critical phase in the history of the Macedonian Kingdom, which begins with the untimely death of Alexander the Great and the claim to the throne of the Macedonian king

by his descendants. In order to claim the throne of Macedonia, General Kassandros married the half-sister of Alexander the Great, Thessaloniki, in whose honor he founded the city.

The trademark of Thessaloniki is the White Tower. A fortification tower of the 15th century, which was later used as a shelter for the Janissaries and as a prison for death row inmates. It is one of the most famous buildings-symbols of cities in Greece and has 6 floors and 34 meters high. At first it was called Leo's Tower and from the 17th century onwards it was unofficially called Kalamaria Fortress and Janissaries' Tower. It got its modern name when a Jewish convict whitewashed him in 1891 in exchange for his freedom.

People in Thessaloniki live in different rhythms from those of the classic big city and despite their work and stress they have managed to maintain their calm and serenity and not to sacrifice the standard of living they have on the altar of workaholism. You can see this by observing their faces or even by how they walk on the road. That's why their motto is "Loose…". The entertainment centers and the market of Thessaloniki are equal or even better than the one of Athens and for this reason, apart from the Bride of Thermaikos, the foreigners who visit it call it Second Paris.
