The village of Old Hersonissos was built upon the hill in order to protect the inhabitants from the pirates who were dominant in the waters of the Aegean. Even though the city was founded during the Minoan times, it had its moments of glory and the amassing of great fortunes during the Roman and early Byzantine period. Relics of the Byzantine era can be found mostly at the port and on the Acropolis.
The Venetians and the Turks left their mark on the area as well. The decline of the city was caused mainly due to Saracens and other pirates, who forced the inhabitants to seek shelter on the slopes of the surrounding mountains in order to survive. After the 1950s people started to develop an ever-increasing interest in its tourist hosting capabilities.
