Myconians And Dodecatheon

Mykonos is a very well known island in the Aegean Sea and belongs to the Cyclades Complex. The capital of the island is Hora which is located on the west side of the island. Mykonos was one of the first Greek islands that was turned into a famous holiday destination. mykonos luxury villas Tourists have been flocking there since the 1960s. Today Mykonos is considered to have one of the liveliest and most active nightlife in Europe. The most famous part of the island is called Little Venice because of its resemblance to Venice.

Besides the current data though, Mykonos has an interesting story to say as well. The island was named after the hero Mykonos, son of Aini of Karystos and Ryos of Zarykos. The Mykonians worshiped the Greek Dodecatheon, as did the rest of Greece. However, they had a special relation to Dionysus and his mother Semelis, Demeter (Chloe) and Poseidon. In their honor were held festive feasts with sacrifices of boars, lambs and rams. The coins of Mykonos bear Dionysus in full body with his head or the head of Poseidon.

Mykonos was first colonized by the Egyptians, Icarians, Phoenicians and Minoans and later on by the Ionians. The residents of Mykonos were thought to be quite greedy and were treated as such, in the ancient world. It is characteristic that the island is rarely mentioned in the ancient manuscripts.
