Hersonissos is a small town in Crete that has been inhabited since the Minoan era. One of the main factors that contributed to that was the good climate and the natural windless port created by the Kastri hill and also a port in Cape Drapanos. Later, in classical times, Hersonissos became an independent city. In Hellenistic times, Hersonissos was the port of the Doric city of Lyttos, which was located inland and had gained great power at that time. The administration was exercised by Lyttos but Hersonissos maintained limited autonomy and had its own currency depicting the bow of a ship. During this period, a part of the temple of Vritomartida was found on Kastri, where many coins, parts of pottery and figurines were found.
In the following years, a gendarmerie station and a customs house were created in order to cover the needs of its small port. Things remained stagnant for many years, until in the 1960s tourism discovered Hersonissos and the first hotels began to be built. The industry of tourism continued to expand in the following years and Hersonissos continued to grow in order to accommodate and entertain the increasing number of tourists every year. villas in hersonissos On the east, there are many beaches with golden sand, which are formed mainly in front of hotels. The beach of Silva Maris is probably the most organized of them, with a lifeguard. Even further east, one can find more sandy beaches, which are some of the busiest in all of northern Crete.
