Santorini Island Through History

As far as the historical origins of Santorini are concerned, in its place used to lie 3 smaller, rather insignificant, islands, which were later incorporated into Santorini. These places were profitis Ilias, the Rocks above Athinios, (the place where the modern harbor is located) and Monolithos, an isolated rock located on the east side of the island. At the time this whole formation used to be called "Stronghylì", i.e "Round".santorini luxury suites

In 1300 BC, the name of the island changed again to "Kallisti", as the Phoenicians arrived and took over. Later on, in 1115 BC, things changed again as the Dorians from Sparta got in charge and named Santorini after king, Thira. It was during that time new modern buildings, villages, harbors and temples were built. In the Byzantine Years, Santorini became a center of Christianity.

Even during the years of the Ottoman Empire, the Turks never actually colonized the island, so Santorini enjoyed a partial autonomy and a self–government. The inhabitants had the freedom to elect their representatives who had to deal with Ottoman and Venetian authorities. In reality, the island was forced to be tax-liable to both the Turks and the Republic of Venice. Today, the main town, Thira or Firà, is worldwide known for its white-washed houses, its Byzantine white churches with the sky-blue domes and its picturesque small streets. Moreover, at the various small shops a person can find almost anything, from jewels to elaborate artwork and from local tastes to delectable wines.
