Heraklion Deserves A Visit!

The largest city in Crete is Heraklion (127,600 cat.) Which is also the capital of the island. The prefecture of Heraklion is the largest of the prefectures of Crete. It is located between the prefectures of Rethymno and Lassithi. Its area is 2,641 sq.km. and the population reaches 250,000 inhabitants. The capital of the prefecture is Heraklion, the largest of the cities of Crete with the largest port.


Both the coastal and the mountainous parts of this prefecture, are continuously inhabited from prehistoric times until today. Thus, the area apart from the newly built towns such as Timvaki, Moires, Kastelli plain, Arkalochori, is the richest in attractions from all over Crete, with the impressive palaces of the Minoan era, Knossos, Phaistos, Mallia and the city of Heraklion. The reason for the maintenance and even the increase of the inhabitants in the other municipalities-cities of the prefecture should be attributed to the continuous economic growth of the area but also of the island in general.

The prefecture of Heraklion is divided into 7 provinces: Malevizi, Monofatsi Viannou, Kainourgio Pediados Temenos and Pyrgiotissis. The beaches of the prefecture are many and satisfy the taste of every visitor. It has high and imposing mountains that are green in some places and rocky in others. It also has large and fertile plains like that of Messara.

In the prefecture of Heraklion there are most of the archeological sites, such as Knossos, Phaistos, Mallia, which are three of the four Minoan palaces. But the prefecture does not lag behind in attractions and enchanting beaches like the one in Matala.
