The largest city in Crete is Heraklion (127,600
cat.) Which is also the capital of the island. The prefecture of Heraklion is
the largest of the prefectures of Crete. It is located between the prefectures
of Rethymno and Lassithi. Its area is 2,641 sq.km. and the population reaches
250,000 inhabitants. The capital of the prefecture is Heraklion, the largest of
the cities of Crete with the largest port.
Both the coastal and the mountainous parts of
this prefecture, are continuously inhabited from prehistoric times until today.
Thus, the area apart from the newly built towns such as Timvaki, Moires,
Kastelli plain, Arkalochori, is the richest in attractions from all over Crete,
with the impressive palaces of the Minoan era, Knossos, Phaistos, Mallia and
the city of Heraklion. The reason for the maintenance and even the increase of
the inhabitants in the other municipalities-cities of the prefecture should be
attributed to the continuous economic growth of the area but also of the island
in general.
The prefecture of Heraklion is divided into 7
provinces: Malevizi, Monofatsi Viannou, Kainourgio Pediados Temenos and
Pyrgiotissis. The beaches of the prefecture are many and satisfy the taste of
every visitor. It has high and imposing mountains that are green in some places
and rocky in others. It also has large and fertile plains like that of Messara.
In the prefecture of Heraklion there are most
of the archeological sites, such as Knossos, Phaistos, Mallia, which are three
of the four Minoan palaces. But the prefecture does not lag behind in
attractions and enchanting beaches like the one in Matala.
For anyone who chooses Heraklion for their next
